Why Buy Organic Baby Clothing?

Organic cotton is healthy for all our planet's creatures, from children and wildlife to farm and factory workers. Clothing made with organically grown cotton does not retain toxic residues; it is a pure, natural, and breathable fiber. Organically grown cotton is not treated with pesticides. Organically grown cotton does not use petroleum-based fertilizers. The solution to this problem is to go organic. Organic farmers rely on crop rotation, not chemicals, to maintain and replenish soil fertility. In order to meet international organic standards and obtain organic certification, a field must be pesticide-free for at least three years, and organic cotton farmers cannot use genetically modified cottonseed. Organic cotton has softer, longer fibers than conventional cotton, so the resulting fabric is softer, thicker, and more durable.

Organically grown cotton does not use genetically engineered seed.

Organic cotton is especially great for infants and children. Whereas pesticide and chemically-treated clothing traps heat and prevents skin from absorbing adequate moisture—often causing rashes and eczema on sensitive skin—organic cotton is natural and breathable. Children with allergies particularly benefit, as organic cotton does not have the residual toxic residues that linger on conventional cotton. Even those without sensitive skin find organic cotton more comfortable and kid-friendly. The longer fibers stretch as children grow.

The best way to support organic cotton farmers is to use your consumer power wisely and support those businesses that make their products sustainable from the farm to the store. Select a store that creates children's clothing and accessories made with nontoxic dyes and no chemical bleaches or finishers. In addition, it important that products are made in fair-trade-certified factories that are monitored for worker health and safety.

Whether shopping for kids clothing, sheets, blankets or personal care products, look for organic fiber products. Your children—our planet's future—will thank you.

Too many good reasons to use organic baby diapers!

A healthy choice?
The manufacturers of disposables rely on studies, which seem to prove, that reusable cloth diapers, which tend to leave baby's bottom more wet than the hypermodern synthetic disposables, directly lead to sore bottoms. However, many mothers find the opposite true.  Fewer sores and fungal infections with cloth diapers. Among the reasons are the improved air circulation in the cloth diapers and the lower temperatures. Disposables support the temperature build up and thus create the ideal climate for microorganisms to grow.

Babies are sensitive, so it is extremely important to keep harmful substances away from them. Diapers and clothing are in direct contact with a babies skin 24 hours a day - a good reason to invest in safe products. Organic diapers and clothing are an excellent choice, because no chemicals are used to grow the cotton or manufacture the diapers.

Environmental  Balance - no difference between disposables and re-usable diapers?
Manufacturers of disposable diapers claim that cotton diapers do not offer a more eco-friendly alternative. Although the waste is reduced (more than 18 billion tons in the USA per year!), the production and high water consumption of reusable cotton diapers is said to balance the effect on our environment. However, when looking closer at these studies one finds, that they are conducted with a biased view. The production of cotton diapers can be made in a very eco-friendly way when using organic cotton, but this fact is always neglected in studies! And water consumption really depends on the laundry habits. Most mothers do only two machine-loads per week, hot washings and ironing are usually unnecessary and the use of eco-friendly detergents further reduces the impact on the environment.

The biggest reason to feed organic foods:

Because it's better for your child

  • Children with their smaller size, rapid growth rate and speedy metabolisms are more vulnerable to developmental damage than adults.  Research shows that a child gets four times more exposure to pesticides in their foods than adults.
  • Immature infant organs and body systems are more susceptible to damage from toxins in foods. Infant digestive tracts absorb toxins more easily, and young kidneys are inefficient at excreting toxins, allowing them to circulate longer in the body.
  • Infants' diets are usually restricted to a small range of foods that may also place them at higher risk of pesticide exposure.
  • Current regulations of acceptable pesticide residues allowed in conventional, non-organically grown food are based on standards developed for adult consumption not children.  Children just cannot withstand that level of exposure.
  • Research shows that organically grown foods may be more nutritious than conventionally grown foods.  For example, organic fruits and vegetables have been shown to contain more vitamin C and are richer in some antioxidants such as polyphenolic compounds.  Furthermore, organically grown grains may have better quality protein than non-organic grains.
  • Organically grown foods taste better too!
