Crown and Chimney Repair

On this page you will find many different Cleaners and Sealers to repair your Chimney and Chimney Crown.

Protect Your Investment-

There are approximately 40 million masonry chimneys in North America and the most common problem with these structures is water penetration.  Water causes over 1 billion dollars in damage annually in the form of staining, loss of insulation value, freeze-thaw damage, deterioration, and ultimately structural failure.

All new and existing masonry chimneys are susceptible to water damage and even if repaired, chimneys will continue to deteriorate if they are not protected. We've listed water repellents specifically developed to protect chimneys from the severe weather conditions to which they are exposed.

We recommend a WATER REPELLENT-not a water sealer.  The difference could save you hundreds, or even thousands of dollars in repairs because sealers can actually damage masonry.  Unlike waterproofing sealers that remain on the surface and trap water vapors, the water repellent should penetrate deep enough to protect masonry from destructive water penetration.

Water Damage Can Be Prevented

Chimneys are highly exposed to the elements and, if  left unprotected, are susceptible to structural deterioration. It is important to address this problem before serious damage occurs.

UGL MASONRY CRACK FILLER; ITEM #146 @ $15.50

Img315.jpgWhen you see a crown (mortar cap) of a chimney that's cracked but not separated from the chimney yet, use this material to fill the cracks and make it watertight again before the whole crown has to be replaced.  This product can be applied even in moist conditions.  The purpose of a crown or mortar cap is to prevent water from seeping into the chimney; when its cracked it isn't doing its job and can lead to the deterioration of the whole structure.

CHAMBER-TECH 2000

Img850.jpg

AHRENS CHAMBER TECH 2000 comes in a  5 gallon pail (30 lbs.) in dry form, just add water and apply.  How Do You Get It In There?  From sweeps who are doing it, you take out the damper and sometimes the top one or two rows of bricks to gain access to the smoke chamber.  It's work, but if it's got to be done, this is the material to do it with!!

ITEM #30250 - 30 lb @ $72.00

Crack and Joint Sealant (formerly CRACK MAGIC)

Img851.jpgCrack and Joint Sealant (formerly CrackMagik) is just the ticket to stop water infiltration in exterior cracks up to 1/8" in mortar joints on chimneys, brick, or stone walls. It keeps water out where water repellent alone comes up short.

Just brush on with one of the two specially designed brushes included with each container. A half-gallon container will treat the mortar joints surrounding 550 standard size bricks. (Subject to size of bricks, width, and porosity of mortar joints, degree of damage, etc.)

And Crack and Joint Sealant doesn’t significantly change the appearance on most walls or chimneys. It just leaves a slight gloss on dense surfaces. Build-up on brick face can cause cloudy appearance.

With Crack and Joint Sealant you can solve a lot of tough leak problems without the expense of tuckpointing or surface grouting. Manufacturer recommends product be stored where temperatures don’t go below 40° F. Product will solidify when too cold.

Comes with a 10-year warranty

chimneysaver.jpgChimneySaver comes in water-base and solvent-base formulas, each with 10 year warranties. Water-base comes in 3, 5, and 30 gallon containers. Solvent-base comes in 5 gallon only. Manufacturer recommends storing 32° or above.

Water-base ChimneySaver is the most popular formula because you can apply it to damp surfaces — no waiting for a dry day. Water-base is non-combustible and has no chemical odor. Solvent-Base ChimneySaver does not meet requirements for architectural coatings in several states. In these areas, use Water-Base ChimneySaver, which according to the manufacturer, is VOC compliant in all states or VOC compliant Solvent Base.

Product Note: Each gallon of Water-Base or Solvent-Base ChimneySaver covers approximately 100 sq. ft., depending on surface porosity and application.

 Img857.jpgSuperior Technology!

ChimneySaver contains patented siloxanes small enough to penetrate most masonry pores up to 1/4" or more.  These special siloxanes form strong bonds with the silica in masonry and concrete.  Because of this bonding process, one application of ChimneySaver  provides up to ten times the water repellent protection of typical sealers.

Img858.jpg   Img860.jpg100% Breathable

Moisture from a variety of sources is always present in masonry and concrete.  Sealers and silicone coatings form a water resistant surface film, which traps water vapors.  If these vapors cannot escape, they will contribute to spalling, scaling, deterioration, and freeze-thaw damage.  ChimneySaver is 100% vapor permeable - a non film-forming water repellent that penetrates and lines masonry pores.

ChimneySaver offers the best protection because it releases water vapors and effectively reduces water absorption!

Brick And Mortar Cleaner

brk mtr clnr chim pict.jpg    brick-mortar cleaner.jpgThe before and after photos at left show you the effectiveness of SaverSystems Brick and Mortar Cleaner in eliminating tough stains - all without using highly caustic chemicals.  Brick and Mortar Cleaner is a concentrated blend of special acids and cleaners that effectively remove rust stains, mildew, algae, smoke, and creosote stains.  It's designed for use on both brick and masonry surfaces.  (Do not use on limestone.  It will dissolve limestone.)

Application is easy - just use a low-pressure sprayer or any nonmetal brush or roller.  You'll need a stiff-fiber, non-metal scrub brush to do the scrubbing.  Goggles, chemical splash gloves and a respirator are required.

For smoke stains inside the house, Brick and Mortar Cleaner is not the recommended product, try Speedy White or Paint'N'Peel.

For general cleaning, dilute with two parts water.  For stains, use full strength.  Covers 50-150 sq. ft. per gallon.
